The making of a unicorn: how a strong horse could grow a horn







Recently I was asked to prepare a presentation on what “Data Science” is; the audience was database professionals, and some technical architects. I thought it would be fun to post it here.

There is a lot of confusion (often deliberate) on what “Big Data” is and what a “Data Scientist” does or should do. I gathered some definitions from various sources and put them out there to help people to kind of generate or further their own opinions.

Being myself, I have decided to highlight my favourite definitions. To me there is too much hype, and a more "down to earth" view is helpful.

To me a “Data Scientist” is someone who has a wide range of skills:

And especially a personality type that will thrive is a process (since I see the practice of “Data Science” as a process with a few loops)



So the path for people with good technical (computer science) skills to become unicorns is dual, a mix of hard and soft skills:
